Sadrist movement: Iraq on the verge of abyss
Shafaq News / Ahrar bloc that represent the Sadrist movement in the Iraqi Parliament warned on Thursday, that Iraq is heading into the “unknown” and it is going to “abyss” as a result of the deteriorating security situation, stressing that the scenario of sectarian violence in 2006 began to be repeated.
The country is witnessing the worst political and security crisis since in a daily basis along with the government inability to find political solutions.
“The calls which were launched recently from the leader of the Islamic Supreme Council , Ammar al-Hakim and Prime Minister , Nuri al-Maliki for a meeting of the political blocs came late, but important at the same time,” A member of the bloc , Hussein Kadhim told “Shafaq News”.
“Iraq is on the verge of the abyss and did not meet the political blocs don’t unite their positions, Iraq will head to unexpected consequences,” he said.
The political divisions in Iraq returns back to 2010 when the Iraqi government was formed, but in deepened unexpectedly since the withdrawal of U.S. forces in late 2011.
The situation in the country worsened even more when protests began last December and is still going on in the western and Northern provinces of the country against the government policies.
The ever-present tensions between Iraq’s Sunnis and Shiites have escalated, especially after an incident last month in Hawija, in northern Iraq, where Iraqi security forces raided a site used by Sunni protesters to demonstrate against the Shiite-led government.
The bloodshed has raised fears of a re-emergence of the levels of sectarian violence seen in 2006 and 2007.
