Iraq Oil News: Britain pleased with contracts to develop Iraq’s oil and gas riches

Britain encourages its companies to contribute to Iraq’s development, particularly its oil and gas riches, said Britain’s ambassador to Iraq Simon Collis.

“I warmly welcome the direct participation of British firms in the project of Basra Gas, which is aimed at putting an end to the flaring of associated gas from southern Iraqi oil fields,” said a statement signed by Collis.

The statement, in Arabic, said two of Britain’s largest firms, Shell and British Petroleum, were heavily involved in developing Iraq’s oil riches and infrastructure.

“The firms are offering an excellent example of how British companies should participate in activities across the country,” said the statement.

Besides their work in developing the country’s associated gas, the companies have a contract to build a terminal at Khor al-Zubair on the head of the Gulf to boost Iraq’s oil export potential and external trade.

The statement said the two projects “will provide great benefits for Iraq, and increase the supply of energy and oil by-products to the Iraqi people.”

“I am especially pleased with efforts to lessen the volume of the associated gas that is being flared in Iraq,” Collis said, adding that the project will benefit the environment in the region and across the world.

“It is very encouraging to see British firms investing in Iraq,” he said. “We will continue supporting British firms willing to work in Iraq, a country which today represents a market to secure jobs at present and in the future.”
